This classic Orthodox cross carries a powerful spiritual message through its clean form, sacred imagery, and traditional Church Slavonic inscriptions. Though more restrained in composition, it is deeply rooted in Orthodox symbolism and speaks clearly of Christ’s victory, salvation, and divine protection.
On the front, the cross bears the image of the Crucifixion of Christ. Around Him appears the traditional inscription ІС ХС НИКА — “Jesus Christ conquers.” In Orthodox tradition, ІС ХС is the abbreviation for Jesus Christ, while НИКА means “conquers” or “is victorious.” Above Christ is ІНЦІ, the Church Slavonic form of “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” On the bail appears ЦРЬ СЛАВЫ, meaning “King of Glory,” proclaiming that the One crucified on the Cross is also the victorious Lord of heaven and earth.
At the bottom of the cross are the skull and bones beneath the Cross. This represents the skull of Adam. According to Christian tradition, Christ was crucified at Golgotha, “the place of the skull,” which was associated with Adam’s burial place. The meaning is that through His Cross, Christ conquers death and redeems fallen humanity. Nearby appears the traditional abbreviation МЛ РБ, commonly understood as “The place of the skull became Paradise.” This is a profound image in Orthodox tradition, expressing that through the Cross, death is overcome and Paradise is opened again to mankind.
The reverse side features St. Peter, identified by the inscription СВ АПЛ ПЕТРЪ — “Holy Apostle Peter.” He is shown holding the keys, a traditional symbol of his apostolic authority and his role as one of Christ’s closest disciples. Above him, the bail bears the inscription СПАСИ И СОХРАНИ, meaning “Save and Protect.” This beloved prayer is often found on Orthodox crosses as a short but powerful appeal for Christ’s care and protection in daily life.
Together, these sacred images and inscriptions make this cross far more than jewelry. The front proclaims Christ crucified and victorious, while the reverse adds the intercession and witness of St. Peter, one of the pillars of the Church. It is a cross that speaks of faith, courage, protection, and the hope of salvation — a meaningful piece to wear every day.
