This richly detailed Orthodox cross is a striking expression of faith, combining traditional Church Slavonic inscriptions, the image of the Crucifixion, and a beautifully layered design in silver with a gold-toned figure of Christ. Every element is filled with meaning, making this pendant not simply a piece of jewelry, but a visible confession of faith and devotion.
On the front, the cross bears the Crucifixion of Christ. On either side appears the traditional abbreviation ІС ХС, meaning Jesus Christ. Above Christ is ІНЦІ, the Church Slavonic form of “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” On the upper section of the cross appears ЦРЬ СЛАВЫ, meaning “King of Glory,” proclaiming that the One crucified on the Cross is also the victorious Lord.
At the base of the cross appears the skull and bones beneath the Crucifixion. This represents the skull of Adam. According to Christian tradition, Christ was crucified at Golgotha, “the place of the skull,” which was associated with Adam’s burial place. The meaning is that through His Cross, Christ conquers death and redeems fallen humanity. Nearby appears the traditional abbreviation МЛ РБ, commonly understood as “The place of the skull became Paradise.” In Orthodox symbolism, this powerfully expresses that through Christ’s sacrifice, the place of death becomes the beginning of eternal life.
The reverse side is covered with the famous Orthodox prayer to the Cross in Church Slavonic, making this pendant not only a symbol of faith, but also a prayerful reminder of divine protection. The prayer begins with the words “Да воскреснет Бог…” — “Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered…” It is a powerful appeal to the Precious and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord, asking for protection against evil and for help through the power of Christ’s victory over death and hell.
The combination of bright silver, darkened details, and the gold-toned figure of Christ gives this piece exceptional visual depth. The ornamental flourishes around the cross add elegance and distinction, while preserving the sacred character of the design.
